KALINGA MOCK PARLIAMENT

The Kalinga Mock Parliament project for senior secondary students is not only an educational endeavor but also a platform for fostering critical thinking skills and civic engagement. We conduct a three-month training program aimed to familiarize the students with India's constitution and parliamentary practices, enabling them to gain a deeper understanding of the principles of parliamentary democracy and representative governance. During the training period, students are exposed to a wide range of national and global issues, which serve as the foundation for their debates in the Mock Parliament. The project organizers recognize the importance of providing students with the opportunity to explore and discuss topics that hold significant relevance and impact on society.

 

One of the key issues deliberated upon was the concept of Universal Basic Income (UBI) as a potential solution to combat poverty in India. Students engaged in thoughtful and informed discussions, examining the potential benefits and challenges associated with implementing such a system. This topic allowed them to explore the economic and social implications and encouraged them to think critically about poverty alleviation strategies. Another crucial issue that the students tackled was the Russian invasion of Ukraine and India's position in the matter. This topic provided an avenue for students to analyze and discuss the complexities of international relations, diplomacy, and India's stance on global conflicts. By exploring this issue, students gained insights into the dynamics of geopolitics and the importance of considering multiple perspectives in international affairs.

Additionally, through the concept of Mock Parliaments, the students explore the concept of federalism and the significance of state diversity within the Indian republic. Through engaging in discussions on this topic, they delve into the intricacies of India's federal structure and the balance of power between the central government and the states. This exploration allows them to appreciate the unique cultural, linguistic, and regional diversities that contribute to the fabric of India's democracy. This project provides students with a platform to exercise their freedom of speech and express diverse viewpoints. By drawing from their own experiences and engaging in debates on significant issues, students develop a deeper understanding of democracy and policy-making. This not only fosters their analytical and communication skills but also instills in them a sense of civic responsibility and the importance of active participation in the democratic process.
